The Mario Galaxy Movie and Franchising
Went of to see the Mario movie… Loved it to bits! It feels very weird to me to be the direct demographic of any product. Even since i was a child i always felt like the odd one out. So it is a welcome feeling.
Regarding the movie itself i thing it is a 9/10 no really any notes. I did disliked Fox thoroughly though.
Nintendo despite having IPs that are older than most of us is quite resistant to these inter franchise movements. Everybody loves Midna from Twilight princess both as a character and in less wholesome ways, and despite that and Nintendo knowing that she only ever appeared in Twilight Princess and will likely never appear elsewhere.
Can you imagine Disney creating a character like that and not making 17 side shows, movies, comics and whatnot to tie it in? The franchise is the whole point for them, that is the business model.
It is funny because Aonuma wanted to make a Twilight Princess sequel, the game is beloved and despite that Miyamoto said no “Do the crossbow training mini game instead” paraphrasing of course. Which I do not think it was a great idea, I think TP was a bit sparse so adding more to it sounds awesome. But it also shows the head honchos and Nintendo are really resistant to milking any specific iteration of their work.
I think only direct Zelda sequels haven been II, Majora’s Mask, Tears of the Kingdom, oh and of course Phantom Hourglass and Spirit tracks. Technically those four sword adventure games regarding A link to the past. But not counting em. And in any case all of those brought a lot more material to the table were not just franchise add ons.
A closer example is Krystal, people have adored her from the get go from pretty obvious reasons and Nintendo has kept her on most games since but only as a side character. Which again i appreciate the restraint of not making 7 other games with her. It does show us their priorities are elsewhere.
I was also surprised they used Fox McCloud instead of anything else, they have 40 years of Mario and the movie is already filled with references of that. Ever since Zero Nintendo decided to pretend Star Fox does not exist. So shoving Fox here is interesting to say the least.
Unlike Fox i did loved the other cameos, mostly cause they were indeed cameos not full side characters. Piantas, Bowser Jr incarnation from Sunshine, the villains from Mario II, even G&W was awesome and we had Pikmins!
You hear that PIKMINS in my Mario movie
Pikmins!
PIKMINS!!
PIKMINS!!!
I adore those little fellas. Really wish Fox was not in the movie or was just a cameo like them.
Oh Rosalina technically also falls under this. She has appeared only on the 2 main galaxy games and has been a cameo on some of the sport games but she got a new role and lore in the movie, which I am not complaining did not wanted the movie to be the same anyway.
The point i want to make is that Nintendo is quite reticent to do this inter-IP affairs and just shoved the movie with lots of those for some reason, probably for franchise building and setting 7 movies in the future. Which is what i really did not liked.
Also I am surprised they went to base the movie on Galaxy, feels rather recent it is only… Almost 20 years… OK i feel old now
